Founded just over 10 years ago, Teach First offers one of the best and highly-regarded graduate schemes in the UK. The scheme has won a variety of awards, the most recent one being “The Diversity Recruitment Award” at the National Graduate Recruitment Awards 2014.
Teach First will be recruiting 1,550 graduates to its 2-year Leadership Development Programme this year. This is great news not only for those students and graduates looking to pursue a career in teaching, but also those looking to develop their leadership skills while working in a fast-paced teaching environment and giving something back.
Teach First Leadership Development Programme
Teach First harnesses the energy, enthusiasm and drive of outstanding graduates and experienced professionals and equips them with leadership skills to enable inspirational teaching in schools in challenging circumstances across England and Wales. At the same time Teach First’s two-year Leadership Development Programme gives participants the skills, experience and leadership development training to excel in careers in any field.
The STEM Challenge
According to Teach First, “62% of students eligible for free school meals fail to achieve a science GCSE at grade A*-C and 58% fail to achieve this in maths”; while at the same time, “45% of employers are concerned that they will not fill posts in their organisations that require graduate or higher level STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) qualifications”. This results in a vacuum created by the lack of skills that a STEM qualification provides, which will affect the UK industry and labour market in the long term. To tackle this, Teach First is looking to encourage more STEM graduates to pursue careers in STEM or teaching of STEM. If this isn’t enough to convince you, keep reading to find out more about the application process.
